Kahlúa is the coffee liqueur that built the modern dessert cocktail, and you will find it behind the bar at Camp West in West Seattle. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, it blends rum, sugar, and Arabica coffee into something dark, sweet, and unmistakably warming. We reach for it constantly: it is the soul of a White Russian, the lift in an Espresso Martini, and an easy pour over ice when you want something rich and low-key after dinner in our cabin-inspired room.
About the Producer
Kahlúa traces back to 1936, when Pedro Domecq began producing it in Veracruz, on Mexico’s Gulf coast. The name comes from the local Nahuatl language and is generally translated as “House of the Acolhua people.” Where many European coffee liqueurs leaned on brandy or neutral spirit, Domecq built his version on a rum base paired with Mexican-grown coffee, a choice that still defines the brand today. Kahlúa is now part of the Pernod Ricard portfolio and remains one of the best-known coffee liqueurs in the world.
Style & Flavor
This is a sweet, full-bodied coffee liqueur built around Arabica coffee, sugar, and rum, with a touch of vanilla character. It pours thick and deep brown, with a glossy texture that coats the glass. The current bottling sits at 20% ABV, making it gentle enough to sip yet sturdy enough to carry a cocktail.
Tasting Notes
Expect aromas of roasted coffee, brown sugar, and vanilla. The palate is plush and sweet, with cold-brew coffee, caramel, and a faint cocoa note. The finish is smooth and lingering, with coffee bitterness arriving just in time to balance the sugar.
How to Enjoy It at Camp West
Our Kahlúa pour is $8. Sip it neat over a single large cube as a relaxed digestif, or let us fold it into a classic. It is the backbone of our White Russian and a key player in the Espresso Martini, and it adds depth to an after-dinner coffee. Ask your bartender and we will point you to the version that suits the night.
FAQ
Is Kahlúa made with real coffee? Yes. It is built on Arabica coffee grown in Mexico, along with rum and sugar, which is why the coffee flavor reads as genuine rather than artificial.
How strong is Kahlúa? The standard bottling is 20% ABV, lower than most spirits, which is part of why it works so well as a sweet, sippable liqueur and cocktail ingredient.
