If you love the soft sweetness of wheated bourbon but want more muscle behind it, Weller Antique 107 is the bottle to reach for at Camp West in West Seattle. This is the highest-proof expression in the standard W.L. Weller lineup from Buffalo Trace, bottled at a bold 107 proof. Affectionately nicknamed the “poor man’s Pappy,” the red-label Antique delivers the same prized wheated recipe with a fuller, richer punch. It is one of the most requested pours among the whiskey crowd who find their way into our cabin-inspired bar in the Junction.
About the Distillery
Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky is one of the most decorated distilleries in America and home to the entire Weller family. The line is named for William Larue Weller, the Kentucky distiller who championed using wheat instead of rye as bourbon’s secondary grain. That legacy lives on across every Weller bottle, with Antique 107 representing the bolder end of the everyday range.
Style & Mash Bill
Weller Antique 107 is a wheated straight bourbon bottled at 107 proof (53.5% ABV). Like the rest of the Weller and Van Winkle range, it uses Buffalo Trace’s undisclosed wheated mash bill, swapping rye for wheat to create a softer, sweeter backbone. The extra proof gives it noticeably more weight and intensity than the 90-proof expressions.
Tasting Notes
The nose offers rich caramel, vanilla and toffee with hints of dried fruit and baking spice. On the palate it is well balanced, with sweet fruit, strong vanilla and a sharp, spicy kick, plus notes of dark chocolate and ripe cherry. The finish is long and warming, with caramel and spice that linger. The higher proof carries plenty of flavor without turning harsh.
How to Enjoy It at Camp West
At 107 proof, this one rewards a little patience. We love it neat for the full experience, or over a single large rock to gently tame the heat and open up the fruit. It also makes a phenomenal, full-bodied Old Fashioned if you ask our bartenders. The pour is $16.
FAQ
Why is Weller Antique 107 called the “poor man’s Pappy”? It shares the same wheated mash bill as Pappy Van Winkle but is far easier to find and more affordable, while delivering a similar flavor profile.
Is 107 proof too strong for a beginner? Not at all. The wheated recipe keeps it surprisingly smooth. Add a little water or a large cube and it opens right up.
