The Glenlivet 12 Year is a benchmark single malt, the bottle many people think of first when they think of Speyside Scotch, and it has a well-earned spot at Camp West, our cabin-inspired cocktail bar in West Seattle. Smooth, fruity, and quietly elegant, it is the kind of dram we hand to someone who says they are not sure they like Scotch, because it tends to change their mind.
About the Distillery
The Glenlivet has been distilling in Scotland’s Speyside region since 1824, when George Smith took out one of the first legal licenses in the glen. The distillery helped define the smooth, approachable Speyside style and remains one of the best-selling single malts in the world, a reputation built squarely on this 12 Year expression.
Region & Style
This is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky. Speyside is known for elegant, fruit-forward malts with little to no peat, and The Glenlivet 12 is a textbook example. It is double-oak matured in both American and European oak casks, which layers sweet vanilla over orchard and tropical fruit, then bottled at 40% ABV.
Tasting Notes
The nose is an elegant mix of pineapple and banana with floral, summer-meadow brightness. The palate brings sweet fruit, peaches and pears, balanced by creamy vanilla, toffee, and a whisper of oak spice. The finish is smooth, gentle, and pleasantly long. Nothing here demands effort; it simply unfolds.
How to Enjoy It at Camp West
We recommend Glenlivet 12 neat, perhaps with a few drops of water to open up the fruit and florals. A single cube is fine if you prefer it cool, though there is no peat smoke to tame here. It is a sipping whisky first and foremost. Our pour is $15.
FAQ
Is Glenlivet 12 peated? No. Like most Speyside malts, it is essentially unpeated, with a bright, fruity, floral character rather than smoke.
What does double-oak matured mean? It is aged in both American and European oak casks, which combine to give vanilla sweetness and orchard fruit depth.
