Del Maguey Vida Mezcal

Del Maguey Vida is the bottle that introduced a generation of bartenders to real, village-made mezcal, and it has earned a permanent spot on the agave list here at Camp West in West Seattle. Made by the Del Maguey family of single-village mezcals, Vida is an espadín mezcal crafted specifically with cocktails in mind, though it sips beautifully on its own. Its gentle smoke and bright fruit make it the perfect introduction for anyone curious about mezcal, and a reliable favorite for those who already know they love it.

About the Producer

Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by artist and mezcal pioneer Ron Cooper, who helped bring traditional Oaxacan mezcal to a wider audience. Vida is produced in the village of San Luis del Río by the family of Don Paciano Cruz Nolasco and his son Marcos, using the same hand-crafted methods that have defined the region for generations. Everything about Del Maguey points back to a single place and the people who make it there.

Agave & Region

Vida is made from 100% mature agave Espadín grown in San Luis del Río, Oaxaca, the heartland of Mexican mezcal. The agave is roasted in earthen pits, crushed, fermented in open vats, and distilled in copper pot stills. That traditional underground roasting is where mezcal picks up its signature touch of smoke, and the high-altitude Oaxacan terroir gives Vida its layered, fruit-forward character.

Tasting Notes

Expect an aromatic nose of tropical fruit with a hint of honey, leading into flavors of ginger, cinnamon, and a touch of tangerine. The smoke here is gentle and balanced rather than overpowering, finishing long and smooth. It is approachable enough for a first-timer and complex enough to reward a slow pour.

How to Enjoy It at Camp West

Vida is wonderful neat in a small glass, sipped slowly to let the fruit and smoke unfold. It is also a cocktail workhorse, shining in a smoky margarita, a mezcal Negroni, or a Naked and Famous. Ask your bartender what they are pouring it into tonight. A pour of Del Maguey Vida is $11.

FAQ

Is mezcal just smoky tequila? Not quite. Both come from agave, but mezcal can be made from many agave varieties and is traditionally pit-roasted, which gives it that distinctive smoke. Vida is made from espadín agave in Oaxaca.

Is Vida good for someone new to mezcal? Absolutely. Its balanced smoke and bright fruit make it one of the friendliest entry points into the category.
