Peerless Rye is a standout on the Camp West back bar, the bottle we hand to West Seattle guests who think they know what rye whiskey can be. Made by Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co. in downtown Louisville, this is a barrel-proof, non-chill-filtered straight rye built with the same uncompromising sweet-mash approach as its bourbon sibling. For a cabin bar with a serious whiskey program, a rye made this carefully is a point of pride.
About the Distillery
Kentucky Peerless dates to 1889 and Henry Kraver’s original distillery in Henderson, Kentucky. The brand was revived in 2015 by fourth-generation descendant Corky Taylor and his son Carson, who reclaimed the original federal permit number DSP-KY-50 and built a modern grain-to-bottle distillery in Louisville’s Bourbon District. Peerless distills everything in house and never sources its whiskey.
Style & Mash Bill
This is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey with a mash bill of at least 51% rye, rounded out with corn and malted barley. Peerless uses a fresh sweet mash for every batch, a low barrel entry proof, and small batching, then bottles the rye at barrel proof and never chill-filters it. Nothing is added and nothing is stripped away.
Tasting Notes
The nose offers juicy orchard fruit, apple-forward, with baking spice, rye bread, honey, and a touch of vanilla. The palate brings rye spice, oak, pepper, and a hint of peach over brown sugar and vanilla, with heat that enhances rather than overwhelms. The finish is medium and slightly oily, with woody and clove notes. It is a layered, expressive rye.
How to Enjoy It at Camp West
A pour of Peerless Rye is $26. Being barrel proof, it is best approached neat at first, then opened with a few drops of water or a single rock to coax out the orchard-fruit and spice notes. This is a contemplative sipper. If you would like, your bartender can bring water on the side so you can dial it in.
