Weller 12 Year

W.L. Weller 12 Year is one of the most sought-after pours on our shelf at Camp West in West Seattle, and for good reason. This is the original wheated bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery, patiently aged a full twelve years before bottling. In a world of allocated, hard-to-find whiskey, Weller 12 has earned a near-mythic reputation as a smoother, more approachable cousin to Pappy Van Winkle, sharing the same wheated mash recipe. We keep it pouring so that the folks who walk into our cabin-inspired bar in the Junction can actually taste what all the fuss is about, without hunting liquor store shelves for a year.

About the Distillery

Buffalo Trace Distillery sits on the banks of the Kentucky River in Frankfort and is one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in America. The W.L. Weller line honors William Larue Weller, a 19th-century Kentucky distiller credited with popularizing the use of wheat in place of rye as the secondary grain in bourbon. That single decision created an entire category of softer, sweeter whiskey, and the Weller range remains its flagship.

Style & Mash Bill

Weller 12 is a wheated straight bourbon bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV). Buffalo Trace keeps the exact mash bill undisclosed, but it is the same wheated recipe used across the Weller and Van Winkle families, using wheat rather than rye as the flavoring grain. Twelve years in new charred American oak is unusually long for a bourbon at this price, which is part of what makes it such a prize.

Tasting Notes

Expect a nose of honey, toffee, vanilla and baked apple with warm oak. The palate is soft and creamy, leaning into caramel, vanilla bean, brown sugar and gentle baking spice with a touch of leather. The finish is long and warming, with dark fruit, cinnamon and toasted oak rounding things out. It drinks far smoother than its years would suggest.

How to Enjoy It at Camp West

We recommend Weller 12 neat in a Glencairn or rocks glass so you can take in every layer. A single large cube opens it up beautifully if you prefer a touch of dilution. It is generally too special to bury in a cocktail, but our bartenders are happy to build you a refined Old Fashioned around it. The pour is $13.

FAQ

Is Weller 12 really related to Pappy Van Winkle? Yes. Both are made by Buffalo Trace using the same wheated mash bill, which is why Weller is often called a more attainable entry point to that flavor profile.

Why is Weller 12 so hard to find? It is highly allocated, meaning the distillery releases limited quantities. We pour it by the glass so you can enjoy it without the hunt.
