Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye is the barrel-proof rye we reach for when someone at the bar says they want something bold. Made by Wild Turkey in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, it lands on our shelf in West Seattle because it delivers serious intensity without losing the easygoing character that makes Wild Turkey a cabin favorite. Bottled uncut and non-chill filtered at barrel proof (around 112 proof, varying batch to batch), it is a rye built for people who want to taste the whiskey at full strength.
About the Distillery
Wild Turkey has been distilling in the hills above the Kentucky River for generations, guided for decades by the legendary Master Distiller Jimmy Russell and his son Eddie. The Rare Breed line is their barrel-proof showcase, and the rye expression was the brand’s first-ever barrel-proof rye release. It is a blend of straight rye whiskeys of different ages, married together to capture the full depth of the Wild Turkey rickhouse.
Style & Mash Bill
This is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey built on Wild Turkey’s classic rye recipe, reported at roughly 52% rye, 36% corn, and 12% malted barley. The bottling marries rye whiskeys aged several years and is bottled at barrel proof, uncut and non-chill filtered, so nothing is stripped from the texture or flavor.
Tasting Notes
Expect a bright, expressive nose of lemon, green apple, melted caramel, and pie crust, threaded with cinnamon, black pepper, and rye-grain spice. The palate brings toffee, rye spice, oak, and orange peel, with the barrel strength carrying everything in a warm, full wave. The finish lingers on baking spice and a touch of orange peel.
How to Enjoy It at Camp West
At barrel proof, this rye rewards a few drops of water or a single large rock, which opens up the caramel and softens the heat. Drink it neat if you want the full punch, or let our bartenders build it into a stirred cocktail where its backbone really shines. Our pour is $19. Settle in by the fire and take your time.
FAQ
Is Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye very strong?
Yes. It is bottled at barrel proof, around 112 proof, so it is noticeably stronger than a standard 90-proof rye. A little water or ice tames it nicely.
Is it good for cocktails?
Absolutely. The high proof and rye spice make it an excellent backbone for stirred drinks like a Manhattan or Old Fashioned. Just ask your bartender.
