If Blanton’s Original is the bottle that started it all, Blanton’s Gold is its bolder, higher-proof sibling, and it’s a quiet trophy on the back bar at Camp West, our cabin-inspired cocktail bar and restaurant in the West Seattle Junction. Originally created for international markets, Gold has become a sought-after pour for bourbon fans who want everything they love about Blanton’s turned up a notch. We’re glad to have it for the West Seattle whiskey crowd.
About the Distillery
Like the original, Blanton’s Gold comes from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, with barrels matured in the famous Warehouse H. The Gold Edition was first released for export markets, where collectors prized its higher proof and deeper intensity. It carries the same iconic horse-and-jockey stopper, but the label and the strength set it apart.
Style & Mash Bill
This is a Kentucky straight bourbon built on Buffalo Trace’s high-rye Mash Bill #2, the same recipe as the original Blanton’s. The difference is the proof: Gold is bottled at 103 proof (51.5% ABV) versus the original’s 93. That extra strength amplifies the rye spice and oak, giving it a fuller, more concentrated character. As a single barrel, each bottle still reflects one individual cask.
Tasting Notes
The higher proof brings a richer nose of dark caramel, vanilla, and dried orange with deeper oak. On the palate it’s bigger and spicier than the original, layering toffee, charred oak, baking spice, and a touch of dark fruit and tobacco. The finish is long, warming, and noticeably more intense.
How to Enjoy It at Camp West
At 103 proof, Gold rewards patience. We love it neat in a Glencairn so you can take in the full aromatics, with a few drops of water to open it up if you like. Over a large rock it mellows beautifully. A pour runs $32 and is meant to be savored. It’s a special-occasion sipper rather than a cocktail base.
FAQ
How is Gold different from regular Blanton’s? Same distillery and mash bill, but Gold is bottled at a higher 103 proof for a bolder, spicier, more concentrated experience.
Why is it harder to find? Blanton’s Gold was originally an export-only release and remains highly allocated, which is part of why it’s a treat to have on hand.
